Woofing (WWOOFing) in Thailand

Woofing (or WWOOFing, for “World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms”) is a global network connecting volunteers with organic farms. Created in the 1970s in the UK, the concept aims to promote sustainable agriculture and cultural exchange.

How Woofing Works

Woofing is based on a mutually beneficial exchange: by working a few hours per day on a farm (usually 4 to 6 hours), volunteers receive accommodation and meals or a preferential rate depending on the activities and services offered. Tasks vary according to the farm’s needs and may include gardening, animal care, ecological construction, or local product processing.

Some hosts, like ours, offer much more than simple volunteering and cultural exchange. In addition to farm tasks, they provide specialized training in yoga, meditation, permaculture, Thai massage, Thai fruit carving, herbal medicine and plant processing, natural building, aquaculture, traditional medicine, Thai cooking, as well as local music and arts. For these extra services, a small fee may be requested, which is always stated in advance and usually remains affordable.

For example, at some elephant rescue centers, the fees collected from volunteers are used to rehabilitate the animals and cover their food. By participating, volunteers actively support local initiatives while enriching their cultural experience.

Woofing at Our Farm

At our farm, we teach permaculture and natural building, and also practice cultural exchange. This is why we ask for a participation fee, which ranges from €15 to €25, depending on the type of accommodation (see our rates and accommodation page).

We focus on warm hospitality, excellent food, a peaceful natural environment, and meaningful human connections. We believe that Woofing is above all engaged, purposeful travel, not just cheap holidays.

Some may call it eco-tourism, agritourism, or farm tourism, but we believe the term Woofing better reflects what we offer in terms of welcome, friendliness, comfort, flexibility, variety, freedom, sharing, and experiences.

Volunteers participate in the daily life of our organic farm, in the fields and with the animals, as well as in various workshops according to their skills, desires, and interests, with no obligation. You can also choose not to participate and simply observe the many activities taking place on the farm.

Goals and Values

The main goal of Woofing is to promote an environmentally conscious lifestyle while creating enriching learning experiences.

Volunteers provide valuable assistance with a variety of projects. Many hosts practice permaculture or biodynamic farming. Some live off their land, others aim for self-sufficiency; hosts can be families, individuals, cooperatives, communities, or eco-villages.

WWOOF hosts are organic farmers passionate about sharing their knowledge of sustainable practices. Volunteering with them allows you to learn organic and biodynamic farming, natural building, edible forests, water management, composting, and gardening. They contribute to a sustainable way of life, food sovereignty, and healthy communities.

Hosting volunteers is rewarding for both sides, offering a unique adventure and a fresh perspective on life. Some volunteers, inspired by the experience, change their lifestyle, create their own food gardens, or even find their vocation. As a host, you contribute to the growth of the organic movement and to building a more connected and supportive world.

The Golden Rule of Woofing: Give as Much as You Receive

Woofing is based on a mutually beneficial exchange between the volunteer and the host. The golden rule is to give as much as you receive. This means offering your help with enthusiasm, commitment, and respect, while in return receiving accommodation, meals, and a unique cultural experience.

La Règle d'Or du Woofing : Donner autant que l'on reçoit
  1. Commitment and Quality Work

A volunteer should fully invest themselves in the tasks assigned, whether it’s gardening, maintenance, or caring for animals. Working with seriousness and efficiency shows respect for the host who shares their knowledge and daily life.

    Respect and Open-Mindedness

Woofing involves living at the host’s pace, respecting their rules, culture, and lifestyle. Showing tolerance and adaptability fosters a harmonious and enriching experience for both parties.

    Exchange and Learning

Woofing is not just physical work; it is also an opportunity to learn. Asking questions and showing interest in farming methods and local culture demonstrates genuine engagement, strengthening human and cultural connections.

    Gratitude and Sharing

Expressing gratitude for the hospitality received, offering spontaneous help, sharing personal skills, or even preparing a dish from your home country are gestures that enrich the exchange.

By respecting this golden rule, Woofing becomes more than a simple exchange of work for accommodation. It becomes a human and cultural adventure, based on mutual respect, reciprocal learning, and genuine sharing.

8 Lessons Woofing Teaches Us That School Doesn’t

1. Appreciating Other Cultures

Experiencing a culture on the ground is far more enriching than reading about it in books. It allows immersion in different lifestyles, clothing, and foods, making the experience both educational and exciting.

2. Patience and Perseverance

Woofing teaches patience because it requires adapting to a new environment, an often unpredictable work pace, and a variety of tasks. Agricultural results, such as plant growth or soil improvement, take time, teaching volunteers that not everything happens instantly.

It also develops perseverance, as volunteers face physical and mental challenges: difficult weather, demanding tasks, and learning new skills. Overcoming these obstacles strengthens the ability to keep going despite fatigue or difficulty.

By combining patience and perseverance, Woofing builds character and helps manage everyday challenges more effectively.

3. Disconnecting from Social Media

Traveling and Woofing encourage living in the present moment rather than being glued to screens. Filled with rewarding, interesting, and collective activities, Woofing shows that a life well-lived is better than a life spent online.

4. Living in the Moment

Travel teaches you to stop worrying about the future and enjoy the present, fostering excitement and a sense of adventure. It helps to appreciate every moment rather than fret over what you cannot control.

5. We Are Not That Different

No matter the culture or background, everyone seeks security, success, and happiness. Traveling helps break down barriers by showing that everyone faces struggles and hopes, just like us.

6. The World Isn’t as Scary as It Seems

Despite alarming news, most countries are as safe, if not safer, than home. Traveling and Woofing help overcome fears and see the world in a more positive light.

7. We Are More Capable Than We Think

Organizing a trip, handling the unexpected, participating in your host’s daily life, or making new friends shows that we are stronger and more adaptable than we imagined. It brings a sense of pride and freedom.

8. Small Problems Are Not Real Problems

After witnessing other ways of life, daily worries seem trivial. This perspective helps put things into context and appreciate your own situation.
